What This Actually Means
ADHD isn't just about having trouble focusing. It's about having a different kind of brain that processes dopamine differently. This can actually be a superpower in entrepreneurship when you understand how to work with it instead of against it.
Many of the most successful entrepreneurs in history likely had ADHD traits. The ability to see patterns others miss, the hyperfocus on ideas that excite you, the constant drive for novelty. These are all classic ADHD traits that can drive innovation.
Key Scientific Insights from ADHD 2.0
- ADHD is a brain difference, not a disorder: Your brain is wired differently, which can be an advantage in the right environment
- Dopamine deficiency is real: Your brain needs more stimulation to feel motivated, which explains why routine tasks feel impossible
- Hyperfocus is a superpower: When engaged, you can achieve incredible depth and creativity that others can't match
- Treatment works: Both medication and behavioral strategies can dramatically improve your quality of life
My Journey in Three Chapters
Here's how my understanding of ADHD evolved and how it changed my life:
Chapter 1: Ignorance
For my entire life, I never knew anything about ADHD other than stereotypes of hyperactive kids. My workdays were inconsistent. Some days, I'd hit a flow state and achieve a ton. Other days were a total wash. I never knew why I was so inconsistent. Also, I was terrified of psychiatric medicine and refused to consider such options. It took multiple friends pattern matching me to ADHD symptoms to consider getting help.
Chapter 2: Learning and Testing
Thorough testing guided by a psychiatrist helped me recognize ADHD. I scored extremely high on symptoms. The diagnosis was immediately helpful. Two books helped me: ADHD 2.0 and ADHD is Awesome (great starting points to learn more). I started testing what different ADHD medication did for me.
Chapter 3: New Normal
After iterating on different behavioral and medication groupings, I've found a new normal. I now consistently execute and am proud of what I can do. I better recognize my strengths and weaknesses. I'm a much happier person, and I'm more effective in my entrepreneurial and creative endeavors.

What I Wish I'd Known Sooner
Here's what I learned about getting help and building the right support system:
Building Your Team
I worked with professionals who helped me figure out the right balance of behavioral treatment and medication. Having that team in my pocket has been super helpful. It's not about fixing you, it's about optimizing how your brain works.
The right combination is different for everyone. Some people do great with just behavioral strategies, some need medication, most need both. The key is finding what works for you.
Three Steps That Changed Everything
- Recognize the Patterns: Start noticing when your ADHD traits are helping versus hindering your life
- Get Professional Help: Don't try to figure this out alone. Find someone who understands both ADHD and your unique situation
- Build Systems That Work: Once you understand your brain, you can create systems that play to your strengths and help you thrive
